Since a medical laboratory technician works with a wide range of human samples such as blood, urine, stool, and other
body fluids and tissues, they may be subjected to numerous health hazards. In order to reduce or prevent the effects of
these hazards, lab technicians must always adhere to standard safety procedures, especially infection control and
sterilization techniques. There are also hazards which may come from dangerous fumes from chemicals and solutions. For
this reason, they must also wear protective clothing and gear at all times while performing laboratory tests and
procedures. Gloves, masks, and protective eyewear are a must for every
laboratory technician. Generally speaking, lab technicians work in a clean and organized environment, but this may
vary depending on where they are employed. The number of hours they work will also be influenced by their place of
employment as well. In many hospitals and medical laboratory facilities, lab technicians may be assigned to work during
day or night shifts, some even during weekends and holidays.
